Property Taxation

The Florida Forestry Association supports Greenbelt law provisions that encourage forestry operations through fair taxation and fair property evaluation that enable forest landowners to keep their lands in forestry. The Association opposes any change to the law that limits or restricts bona-fide forestry and agriculture from qualifying.

Biological Diversity

The Florida Forestry Association supports biodiversity as accomplished through good forest management practices in achieving landowner objectives. Forest management supports biodiversity by cultivating tree stands of different ages, ensuring that Florida's forest are diverse.

Forestry Best Management Practices (BMPs) and Water Quality

The Florida Forestry Association supports silviculture BMPs and recognized that these practices have shown to be very effective. Florida's BMPs and standards are the most stringent in the Southeastern United States.

Harvesting

The Florida Forestry Association supports the best harvesting methods for the forest conditions at sustainable harvesting levels. These conditions include landowner objectives, wildlife and environmental conditions and site considerations. The Association encourages landowners to consult a professional forester to determine the best sustainable harvesting method.

Forest Fertilization

The Florida Forestry Association recognizes and supports Florida's Silviculture Best Management Practices as guidance for forest fertilization. The BMPs state "… it should be understood that not all silvicultural strategies require, or can benefit from, forest fertilization. Where forest fertilization is conducted, such operations should be planned and implemented with consultation from a knowledgeable professional, and in accordance with all applicable BMPs or other measures that reduce nutrient delivery to water resources".

Herbicide Use in Forest Management

The Florida Forestry Association endorses the use of EPA approved and regulated forest herbicides to meet forest landowners' management objectives within the constructs of Best Management Practices.

Prescribed Burning

The Florida Forestry Association endorses the use of prescribed fire as a forest and wildlife management tool when conducted under the supervision of a State of Florida Certified Burner.

Protected Species

The Florida Forestry Association supports the goals and purpose of the Endangered Species Act and the corresponding state laws. Florida forests have always and will continue to provide habitats for innumerable species. Florida's forest industry maintains a stewardship role, protecting many sites, not only those containing endangered species.

Regulation of Forestry Practices

The Florida Forestry Association supports science-based environmental regulations that recognize sustainable forestry.

Wetland Harvesting

The Florida Forestry Association advocates that harvesting in accordance with Florida BMPs is the most responsible and effective method to sustainably manage wetlands for timber production.

Woody Biomass

The Florida Forestry Association supports sustainable forestry and the practices that provide well-managed, sustainable forests, which meet today’s demands for forest products without jeopardizing the needs of the future. The Florida Forestry Association is confident that Florida forests can play a significant role in supplying woody biomass for energy solutions. We contend that free market forces should be the primary stimulant for the use of wood and wood waste as a renewable fuel source and for determining the optimum fuel choices for energy generation. A healthy forest resource is dependent upon maintaining strong markets, which tend to prevent land conversion to less environmentally friendly uses. Over utilization depletes the resource and weakens markets. Reliable data on growth and yield is needed to foster healthy markets. Where state or federal governments are instituting incentives or mandates for renewable energy, existing woody biomass energy creating companies should be eligible for comparable incentives offered to new business when they expand their biomass energy capacity.
